About

Howdy! My names Luke Moulton and I’m an online marketer, podcaster, outdoors lover, Mac convert, social media user and former web designer.

Back in 2001 after studying Multimedia at Monash Uni, and at the height of the Dot Com crash, I started a web development business with a couple of mates. Clearly the timing was a little off, but there’s never a perfect time for anything in life. We managed to scrape through for the first 12 months, always the hardest time for a start-up, and went on to create a fairly successful web development business.

In early 2008, seven years hard work and 100′s of clients later, we sold the business. The experience of owning and running a web dev agency taught me a truck load about web development, business management, online marketing … and that at the end of the day, a client list is worth bugger all. If you’re a web developer reading this, a word of advice, build assets (hosting, sites etc), our most valuable assets was the couple of hundred clients we had on our own web hosting service. Note to self: there’s a blog post in that!

In 2008 after wrapping up the business I took a couple of months off for wedding in Melbourne and honeymoon in Thailand with my lovely wife, the first decent holiday I’d had in 7 years. If you ever get the chance, go to Thailand, in particular, Phi Phi Island and Koh Samui, just beautiful.

Returning to Melbourne I started work with another web dev agency in a business development / sales roll and lasted 3 days, a fact that doesn’t make it into my resume! I was burned out with the hole web development thing and I’m not a sales man, so I had an open and honest conversation with the owner, who was disappointing but very understanding.

A couple more months regrouping, I decided I wanted to specialise in online marketing and work client side so I could focus on 1 client. Having project managed up to 30 jobs at a time in my former business, I felt the focus would be a welcome change.

I started work as the Online Marketing Coordinator with AVG (AU/NZ); the Australian sales and distribution business for AVG anti-virus software products in June ’08. I was right about the 1 client thing. AVG had a significant monthly AdWords spend, healthy e-commerce revenue, large database, and so many opportunities to explore. A minor increase in e-commerce conversion rates could lead to a significant increase in revenue. The 18 months I spent at AVG gave me the opportunity to hone my skills in many aspects of online marketing.

Now I’m about to embark on a new employment adventure as the marketing manager at Flippa.com an online global market place for buying and selling websites. Stay tuned!

Why a personal blog?

Some may think it narcissistic, but there are a couple of good reasons for creating a personal blog. If you know me, you’ll know I’m not a big self promoter however, Gary Vaynerchuck’s book, Chrush It! (aff), has reinforced the importance of building a personal brand. I believe developing a personal brand and social network, over time, provides one with great leverage and more opportunities.

Aside from personal brand, I also just wanted a place to house all my online profiles. Although not always up to date, there’s Flickr, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, the Podcast… all the links you’ll see on the left of screen. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some.

Anyhoo, I hope you find some of the posts within these pages informative, insightful or entertaining. All three might be asking a bit too much but we’ll see how we go.

Cheers,
Luke
